On Saturday, January 8th Captains Hal Fowler and John Pulley left the safety of Ballantrae’s protected dock to venture 200 miles to Florida’s Fiesta Key in their boats through turbulent seas. Mates Roger Sandstrom and Barry Doying were on board Fowler’s “Roaring-to-Go” and Pulley’s “Aquaholic”, respectively. Tom and Lynn Lab, Dick and Vivian Mandaro, Brie, the Mandaro dog, Frank Toner and Bill Scalia ventured forth in land vehicles arriving on Monday.
On Tuesday we set sail to catch fish. Notable catches were by Dick Mandaro and Tom Lab. Both caught sizable mutton snappers on Roaring-to-Go. The Aquaholic was skunked, but the day was beautiful, the seas calm and all had a great time. The same could not be said for day two. High seas, 30 mile per hour winds, clouds and cold was the weather du jour. A few fish were caught after the two boats retreated to calm shallow water. We had dinner that evening at Lazy Days, a fine restaurant that fellow anglers may wish to try when in Islamorada. The mutton snappers and other fish we caught were prepared by the restaurant. Food was excellent.
Since the forecast for Thursday was for the same weather as Wednesday we decided to return home a day early. Not the best weather, not the best fishing, but great camaraderie and lots of laughs. I would do the trip again in a heartbeat.
