On January 7th ten anglers headed south to Islamorada in the Keys. Some of us had single rooms and others shared rooms at a Days Inn. However, when Captain Hal Fowler was informed that he was to share a room with Bill Scalia he opted instead to drive his camper to the Keys and share his camper with his bride, Sue. We dined at Lazy Days on that evening. The meal was great. On the 8th we boarded two boats and caught 70 or so fish. Accolades to yours truly, Bill Scalia, for providing a substantial amount of “chum” on our first day. He slept, he woke, he provided chum, he fished, he slept, he woke, he provided chum, etc, etc. We had our fish cooked at Uncle’s, a restaurant selected by Roger Sandstrom, and it was a great choice. We fished a full day on the 9th. In total, over the two days, we caught yellow tail snapper, mutton snapper, king mackerel, almaco jack, bar jack, dolphin, grouper and some other undefined fish; far in excess of 100 fish. Scalia, the “comeback kid,” caught an eighteen pound mutton snapper on the second day to win the top prize for largest snapper, $ 50. He barely beat each of Roger Sandstrom’s two huge snappers by a few inches. Art Warden won nothing for catching the largest fish, a very large Amber Jack, which was released. Art could barely lift a knife and fork that evening. Other anglers were Ray Clarke, Bob Dunning, George Greenstein, John Griffin, Tom Lab, and Chuck Van Assche. The all in, per person costs were between $600 and $700. The Club is planning another Keys fishing trip to the Keys in the next few months, probably April. This time it will be at Key Largo. Look for the announcement. Bill Scalia |
