Our February meeting was a special treat for the attendees. It was an opportunity to learn from our local master – Donn Bearman. Donn talked at length about his experiences, methods, and secrets (all except one) for catching the elusive Pompano.

Below are the key points that are Donn’s personal recommendations for the gear we need when fishing for Pompano, however, he provided no guarantees. Also, should you be good enough, or lucky enough, to catch some, Donn also offers his personal recommendation for preparing a wonderful dinner.

Pompano Notes

Line Size:   Mono - 8 lb. diameter test line. (20-30 lb. test braided line)

Line Type: Braided (Fins, Power Pro or similar brand name)

Rod:          Med.- Med. Heavy Action, 8-17 lb. line test, 6’6” – 7’, 1/3:2/3 ratio (2/3 backbone to1/3 tip flex)

Reel:          Medium size (Spool holds 175-200 yards of 8 lb. diameter)

Use 50 – 100 yards backing and 100 yards braid. Quality reels like Shimano 4000 Spheros (good saltwater) or 2500 Stradic or similar quality.  Make sure it feels good in your hand when on the rod.  So attach to rod before buying.

Leader:      Fluorocarbon 20-25 lb. test.

Best Deal may be 150 yards of 25 lb. test from Bass Pro Extreme in the

white box, for about $16.  Otherwise, 25-50 yards for $12 -$18.
