I’ve told this story to other members and found that some of them have already used the following remedy AND SWEAR BY IT!!
When I first moved here I could hardly wait to get out on the ocean. The first time was in my own small 19’ CC, barely ¼ mile off shore, to catch mackeral. It was a calm day with a minor swell. After anchoring up for a short time I started to get queasy but thought I just needed a drink or something. I didn’t even think about being sea sick as I had always thought you needed to be way out on the water and going somewhere. I toughed through it but it wasn’t fun.
This same experience continued to happen in my boat (anchoring on the river also) as well as some of the larger boats I had been invited to fish on by several of our generous members. It turns out things would be OK as long as the boat was under power, but as soon as we’d drop anchor or drift, that same bad feeling would start. Although I never have “lost it” completely, I was beginning to think that going off shore just wasn’t worth the effort. I was spending more time trying not to be sick and worrying that I wouldn’t make it than enjoying the reason I was out there.
I tried all the pills…dramamine and bonine. Perhaps that was why I didn’t fall apart…but the queasiness continued, making boating on the ocean a pretty miserable experience.
I was just about to give up when I read an article about a new product that relied on pressure points in the wrist, much like acupuncture, to relieve motion sickness…no drugs or side effects with high success rates.
I located such a product, called Travel-Eze, in Walgreens. There are two elastic wristbands with about a 3/8” plastic domed insert in each. Following simple directions you place the bands on your wrist with the domed side of the insert pressing where indicated. Cost: $10
I had nothing to lose. I wore them the very next time out. I was eating Italiian Subs, chips, cookies and drinks with reckless abandon by 11 AM…and not even thinking about getting sick…rather just totally enjoying the day and the new experience. Now, I wouldn’t leave home without the bands. They work on planes and cars as well.
If you, or someone you know, has the sort of problem I’ve described, don’t give up until you’ve given the bands a try. If you do try them, please let us know how they worked and we’ll pass the testimonials along to others.
