Ballantrae Angler’s Club

It was a wild idea born in the foggy brain of Bill Scalia………a lunch cruise to a local restaurant aboard Ballantrae yachts.

 

The wheels turned and soon an invitation was sent to the membership for brave Captains and crew to man the foredecks of the flotilla on Saturday, May 3.

 

First came the usual slow response of a few social butterflies who take all kinds of chances in life. Then as time neared and a second call to the sea was made, the flood gates opened and a robust but scruffy crowd of 47 boarded 7 vessels and made headway for Shrimpers in Manatee Pocket.

 

First order of business was to secure the fleet at the dock. This was accomplished with skill and class…..meaning there were no crashes and everyone made it to the dock without a brief swim.

 

Next came the wonderful treatment by the Shrimpers staff with the entire upper deck set aside and tables arranged by boat name. The food was surprisingly good and service was spot on as they say in the British Navy.

 

A brief ceremony was held to present flowers to all the ladies who endure the wrath of arbitrary Captains and swords were given to the Captains to protect their bodies from what might be a rowdy return crew. No stabbings were reported, however.

 

The day was a success and from all indications a repeat of the event is planned for the coming social calendar. Who knows, maybe Bill Scalia will show up for the next one.     John Ghee
