First
For our July Captains Log, I want to report on our new, one day, over and back Bahamas trip. This trip was a lot of fun coupled with the success of catching some tuna. It was a great day for the crossing, including the camaraderie with five fun loving anglers, and some things that made us laugh.
However, our trip didn’t come without some mistakes and blunders. First, being able to travel from here to the fishing grounds in the Bahamas in just over an hour, was impressive; but not nearly as impressive as seeing Bill Scalia’s cheeks blow past his earlobes. That prompted us to slow down a bit and install wind blocks on the boat.
As this entire group of anglers was not used to fishing with each other, it was total confusion as to where to be and what to do when we did actually have a fish on. That has prompted us to have pre-trip meetings in the future. Also, when running into a rain squall, we learned not to listen to the only guy on the boat with rain gear make the suggestion to trudge on. From now on, we either won’t run the squall, or we’ll bring along rain gear with us. One issue (of a personal nature) was quickly avoided and remedied. I won’t go further at this point, but if you really want to know, ask someone who was on board what it was that prompted us to duck.
All in all, this entire trip was great and we intend to do it more often. The fish are there, the water is beautiful, and it is a fun ride. In conclusion, we will go slower, come home sooner, and try to have more experiences.

Your Anglers’ Club, 25 members strong, on five boats captained by Ray Clarke, Don Thompson, Glen Kay, Mory Cabage, and me, participated in the Saint Lucie Power- Squadron poker-run. We had a nice day for the event. Starting by boat at about 10:30 AM, we began visiting different locations to pick up playing cards, finally arriving at Wahoo’s for lunch around noon. We were all safe at home by 2:00 PM. Oh yes, by the way, John and Judy Pulley won over three hundred dollars!
Thanks to the folks who answered the call to help the Power Squadron in this event (Continued on page 5) |
