Ed. Note: Our Ballantrae Angler’s Club was represented in the MCAC Reef Fund Tournament by two boats belonging to Captains Hal Fowler and Chuck Van Assche, with five anglers aboard. While we weren’t in the money, we saw a lot of fishing action catching many Bonita and one 30 inch King. The following is part of Ed Killer’s article describing the results of the event.
Saturday offshore fishing tournaments in Stuart and Jupiter were both won by 35-pound fish — a cobia in one case and a wahoo in the other.

Anglers who participated in the second annual Martin County Anglers Club Artificial Reef Fund Tournament found slow fishing conditions. A fleet of 38 boats gathered for the event and raised more than $15,000 for the artificial reef foundation to help continue to build reefs offshore of Martin County.
Team Rampage aboard R Ka Nu with Dave Powell, Mike Padula, Sal Nofi and Chuck and Diane Pickover was named Top Boat due to Nofi’s division-winning 35-pound cobia. Top Boat was awarded to the boat with the most combined pounds from eligible fish that placed.
Powell said the winning cobia and a 21-pounder that was released took a squid trolled at the Bull Shark Barge off St. Lucie Inlet — one of the county artificial reef program’s projects.
Robert Carlson on Miss K won the dolphin division with a 25-pounder. Emil Laviola’s Sunseeker II weighed the event’s only grouper at 14 pounds. Competitors won $1,000 for first, $500 for second and $250 for third.
